A war veteran (from Latin vetus, meaning "old") is a person who has or is working in the armed forces, or a person who has had long service or experience in an occupation or office.

For the most part, war veterans are treated with great respect and honor for their contribution to the world and country. Many countries have longstanding traditions, ceremonies, and holidays to honor veterans. In Russia, a tradition was established after the Second World War, where newly married couples would on their wedding day visit a military cemetery. In France, for instance, those wounded in war are given the first claim on any seat on public transit. Most countries have a holiday such as Veterans Day to honor veterans, along with the war dead. There are exceptions to this: veterans of unpopular conflicts, such as the Vietnam War, have been discriminated against. Others, such as veterans of conflicts like the Korean War, are often forgotten (even though the casualty rate in Korea was higher than that experienced in the Vietnam War) when compared with those who fought in the World Wars. In some countries with strong anti-military traditions (e.g., Germany after 1945) veterans are neither honored in any special way, nor have their dedicated Veterans Day.

What are some mental pictures of what veterans have experienced in a war?
Q. My English teacher asked me to write an essay about "Why should veterans be honored?" (5 paragraph essay) And they should be honored because they leave their families and homes for our freedom. But she said we could add a mental picture of what veterans have or are being through during the war. I was clueless because I don't know what its like.

A. OK, imagine the smell of rotting meat. Now imagine a sound so loud that it's like being kicked in the head. Add lying in a pile of decomposing human bodies, and finding yourself covered in maggots. But you can't move, because *friendly* artillery is falling short and if you move an inch you'll be torn to bloody shreds. Physically, I was in that FSLN dump hole for about five minutes. Mentally? I'm back there every night, and have suffered flashbacks that have left me curled up on the ground crying. This is *one* incident, lasting about five minutes. I was in the Army for years, and served in combat on three continents. Some days I'm amazed I haven't killed myself yet.

what percentage of our homeless are veterans?
Q. I've heard as much as 30%. Does anyone have a source for this, or a different figure. Seems very sad that the richest and most powerful country in human history can't take care of its veterans.

A. I have worked in the VA and volunteered as a Homeless Veterans' Advocate and can tell you the numbers vary throughout the country. In some places, the % of homeless who are veterans is high, and in others low. One problem for veterans is that we were taught to be very self sufficient during our military days and told that to seek help is a sign of weakness our enemy would prey upon. That belief translates into refusal to seek medical care when very ill to not seeking assistance for financial problems, to refusing to use services local governments have set up for homeless veterans. The federal government's response to any problems veterans have (homeless or otherwise) is to ignore the problem until it is covered in the media, then… [cont.]
