The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Islam recognizes the People of the Book as members of monotheistic faiths founded upon revelation related to its own faith. By contrast, in Judaism, the Jews are often said to be the chosen people, a concept modified by the Christian doctrine of the Elect.

Why do people some people consider Cleveland to be a dirty city?
Q. I visited Cleveland last June and really enjoyed myself there. Before planning my trip, I read a couple a travel books and a few personal opinions on a travel site of people who had visited. Quite a few people regarded it as being a dirty city that offered visitors few entertainment sites; however, when I visited I found it to be a really beautiful city--much cleaner than most! Just wondering what people on yahoo answers have to say about Cleveland. Also, not topic related, but, I saw a UFO in Cleveland; that became the highlight of my trip.

A. I've spent quite a bit of time in Cleveland, as my husband has had 2 surgeries requiring extended stays at Cleveland Clinic. Which is one of the best hospitals I've ever seen, by the way. Downtown Cleveland is rather nice. We liked walking around by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Science Center on the water. And restaurant row has some surprisingly good places. We liked the downtown stadium too -- convenient. Nearby Chagrin Falls was a cute town to visit as a day trip. All in all, it's not a bad place to visit for a while. However, driving from downtown to the hospital, we did pass through some less than desirable areas. But all cities have such areas, so we didn't pay much attention. No UFO's for us, sorry. Just my 2… [cont.]

What would happen if people did research before they actually formed an opinion?
Q. What if people actually tried to understand people before writing them off? What if people actually learned how our government works before deciding they don't like it? What if we went somewhere before saying we don't like the place? What if people put as much care into something as they did hate?

A. The use of stereotypes would be destroyed. People would be less likely to judge. People would be more understanding and comprehensible. The race would be better all around. There would also be more trust in the world. Also, people like that would be a bit more emotional and by that I mean outgoing and eccentric to those of today. But I'd like to know what kind of answer you are rooting for. ~Nayr

Why do people attempt to reinforce or push their opinions on others through questions?
Q. I've noticed that a lot of the time on Y!A, people who post questions aren't actually looking for an answer, but instead a statement that will reinforce their opinion. Usually when someone responds with an answer they disagree with, they attempt to argue/debate with it. And other times, people are just trying to shove their opinion down your throat. Anyone else notice this? Does it annoy you? Why do people do this?

A. Yes, that's how it is one here. But that's ok. This is also a place of sharing. I like some of those questions. I learn from them sometimes or like you said, sometimes they stir a sort of debate. We can't really debate on here and I love to debate so I like it.

Quotes about people

  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.
    • Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42, by Stephen King
  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
