Cavalry (from French cavalerie, cf. cheval 'horse'), were soldiers or warriors who fought mounted on horseback. Cavalry were historically the third oldest (after infantry and chariotry) and the most mobile of the combat arms. A soldier in the cavalry is known by a number of designations such as cavalryman or trooper.

The designation of cavalry was not usually given to any military force that used other animals, such as camels or mules. Infantry who moved on horseback, but dismounted to fight on foot, were known in the 17th and early 18th centuries as dragoons, a class of mounted troops which later evolved into cavalry proper while retaining their historic title.

From earliest times cavalry had the advantage of improved mobility, making it an

"instrument which multiplied the fighting value of even the smallest forces, allowing them to outflank and avoid, to surprise and overpower, to retreat and escape according to the requirements of the moment."

A man fighting from horseback also had the advantages of greater height, speed, and inertial mass over an opponent on foot. Another element of horse mounted warfare is the psychological impact a mounted soldier can inflict on an opponent.

The mobility and shock value of the cavalry was greatly appreciated and exploited in the Ancient and Middle Ages armed forces, and some consisted mostly of the cavalry troops, particularly in nomadic societies of Asia, notably the Mongol armies. In Europe cavalry became increasingly armoured cavalry and eventually became known for the mounted knights. During the 17th century cavalry in Europe lost most of its armour, and by the mid-19th century only some regiments retained the cuirass.

In the period between the World Wars, many cavalry units were converted into motorised infantry and mechanised infantry units, or reformed as tank troops. However some cavalry still served during the Second World War, notably in the Red Army and in the Italian Royal Army. Most cavalry units that are horse-mounted in modern armies serve in purely ceremonial roles, or as mounted infantry in difficult terrain such as mountains or heavily forested areas.

A. Scouts are able to go to any or all of those schools, but with the operational tempo the way it is, you would be lucky to get into one of those schools. That is after you get to your duty station. You can get Airborne in your enlistment contract, which would guarantee you a slot in the school. Ranger School - depending on the unit, there will be slots available for scouts, but they are very limited and given to only the most deserving soldiers. Generally E-5 or greater. Airborne - Get it in your contract or as a re-enlistment incentive. Air Assault - Best chance is as a re-enlistment incentive. Pathfinder - Good luck. Only crusty old 1SG have this badge. Recon Leaders Course - Officers and Senior NCOs only Bradley Master Gunner… [cont.]

Why is it that most of the historians agree that cavalry is the most advantageous tools in battles?
Q. They said that, Before the Industrial Revolution, cavalry was usually decisive. The exeptions were the time when cavalry did not exist, which is a moot point. Can you tell me why most historians agree with this? Then why is it that some people would stubbornly said that infantry before the industrial revolution is somehow better than cavalry? Yes, there are some specific conditions where infantry is more advantageous than cavalry. however, cavalry is better than infantry generally, am I right?

A. I read the book A distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman. In it the descriptions of all battles carried out in the 100 year war between the French and The British, the decisive weapon was the knights in the cavalry, and the reason was that when they charge on the enemy they were in very advantageous position to inflict damage on the infantry since the height of the horse over the man on foot was a win win situation. The knight could inflict a blow on the head of the footman while this one could not reach the knight. Besides, footmen would tire faster, while the horseman would not. Other capabilities were the speed the cavalry had to support different areas of the combat zone. In short, it was the best weapon they had until the cannon made an… [cont.]
