Where can I find a listing of Hills stores closed prior to their merger with Ames?
Q. I know that between the 1985 buyout from the Shoe Company of America, together with the 1987 going publicly traded caused some financial problems for Hills Stores Company. Furthereing the problem was the acquisition of 33 former Gold Circle stores after they went out of business. All of this resulted in Hills closing 63 of their locations in the early 1990's. Eventually in 1998 Ames took over ownership of what was left of Hills. My question is where can I find a listing telling where the locations were that closed prior to Ames taking them over. I have a acquaintance who says he "needs to know" where the Hills stores were that never made it to Ames so he can see if there is one near him and what it is today.

A. The only way to find this obscure information would be to contact Ames and hope you find somone nice enough to help you dig up this old information. Unfortunately, Ames went bankrupt in August 2001, closing 151 stores that included 31 Hills stores. Good luck!
