A veteran (from Latin vetus, meaning "old") is a person who has or is serving in the armed forces, a war veteran, or a person who has had long service or experience in an occupation or office, "veteran of ..." . Military veterans often receive special treatment in their respective countries due to the sacrifices they made during wars. Different countries handle this differently, some openly support veterans through government programs and others ignoring them. Veterans are also subject to illnesses directly related to their military service such as PTSD.

How can I get involved in working with veterans as a volunteer? I am a premedical student?
Q. How can I volunteer at a veteran's rehabilitation facility? My main interest is working with combat veterans who are in physical rehabilitation. I will contact the VA here but want to know if there is a specific department I should speak to. Thanks.

A. I would speak to Human Resources. Contact the larger V.A. facilities in your area. You can call 1-800-827-1000 for the main VA services number, or go to Also, they are starting to build more CBOC clinics in smaller cities (Community Based Outpatient Clinics). Thank you for doing this! Here's for paying jobs:

How will the veterans of the War in Iraq get proper medical treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Q. How will our government assure that the veterans of this war will get proper medical attention for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (i.e Shell Shock)? Will the veterans of this war be ignored like far to many Vietnam Veterans did when they returned from their war? What politician running for the 2008 election has an answer for that question?

A. they'll get the care they need until a year or 2 after the war...then the ones who sent them there will whine that they're abusing the system like welfare mothers and take all the benefits away
