From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A society is a body of individuals that is outlined by the bounds of functional interdependence, comprising also possible characteristics or conditions such as national or cultural identity, social solidarity, or eusociality. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals that share a distinctive culture and institutions. Like other communities or groups, a society allows its individual members to achieve needs or wishes that they could not fulfill separately by themselves without the existence of solidarity. Society, however, can be ontologically independent of, and utterly irreducible to, the qualities of constituent individuals; it may act to oppress. The urbanization and rationalization inherent in some, particularly Western capitalist, societies, has been associated with feelings of isolation and social "anomie". More broadly, a society is an economic, social or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied multitude of individuals. Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. A society may be a particular ethnic group, such as the Saxons; a nation state, such as Bhutan; a broader cultural group, such as a Western society. The word society may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes. A "society" may even, though more by means of metaphor, refer to a social organism such as an ant colony. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Society has brought us external progress, including medical, technological and transportation. However, the majority of the population is merely a product (subconsciously) of societal norms and practices. In other words, society as we "know" it keeps most individuals from ever finding themselves, or seeking truth. In essentially every society that has existed on this planet, the people tend to move away from reality rather than towards it. Why is this the case? Could an enlightened society ever exist? @ Deathcube, I meant to infer that progress in those aspects were attributed (indirectly) to society. @Alan T - I considered it, but that would likely lead to a bunch of answers quoting passages from the bible. Order isn't reality, and the more order there is, the more we move away from ourselves. Answered by VividYouth - Sat Oct 10 20:54:02 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Society" Quotes about society.
