Are paper books, magazines and newspapers doomed to disappear?
Q. Today, I read on the newspaper that in 20 years, paper books, magazines and newspapers may no longer exist, and we might permanently have already entered the multimedia era by then (and even if that hadn't happened by then yet, they assure that sooner or later this will happen). Despite my loving the Internet, I think I will miss reading a paper book at bed, on the beach or on a plane. I must say I almost don't read newspapers and magazines anymore, but I think I would the disappearance of glossy magazines a loss as well... Will things be like this in the future? (Will paper books, magazines and newspapers be relics from the past in a few years from now?...)

A. "They" have been making these predictions for decades. In the 1950s television was supposed to replace radio. I believe it was the 80s that brought us the term "paperless office," though the concept is older. (For more on this, you might want to check into Sellen and Harper's book 'The Myth of the Paperless Office.') I remember when "they" were predicting that this new thing called the World Wide Web was going to replace all current forms of communication. Books were supposed to go away in 10 years time. That was about 15 years ago, and the publishing industry is still going strong. What books/magazines do you recommend for a novice using a DSLR?
Q. I am about to invest in the Nikon D200 as my first step into the exciting world of amateur photography. Up until now, I've just used a standard digital camera and would like any suggestions on good publications that are worth investing in to educate me.

A. I'm not a big fan of magazines, not unless you want to catch up on the latest trends. Yeah, even photography has trends... that selective coloring thing for example, where everything is black and white with just a splash of color on the main subject... that's been done to death. Or cropping off the tops of heads in portraits. Instead, I propose a diabolically clever three part plan. Three things you should do simultaneously: One: Get old school and read a book on the technical side of things. Learn to appreciate your camera as an instrument. Your new D200 is a fantastic camera and it can accomplish so much.
