The American Civil War (1861–1865), also known as the War Between the States as well as several other names, was a civil war in the United States of America. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy). Led by Jefferson Davis, they fought against the United States (the Union), which was supported by all the free states and the five border slave states. In the presidential election of 1860, the Republican Party, led by Abraham Lincoln, had campaigned against the expansion of slavery beyond the states in which it already existed. The Republican victory in that election resulted in seven Southern states declaring their secession from the Union even before Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861. Both the outgoing and incoming US administrations rejected the legality of secession, considering it rebellion. Hostilities began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked a US military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Lincoln responded by calling for a volunteer army from each state, leading to declarations of secession by four more Southern slave states. Both sides raised armies as the Union assumed control of the border states early in the war and established a naval blockade. In September 1862, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made ending slavery in the South a war goal, and dissuaded the British from intervening. Confederate commander Robert E. Lee won battles in the east, but in 1863 his northward advance was turned back after the Battle of Gettysburg and, in the west, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River at the Battle of Vicksburg, thereby splitting the Confederacy. Long-term Union advantages in men and materiel were realized in 1864 when Ulysses S. Grant fought battles of attrition against Lee, while Union general William Sherman captured Atlanta, Georgia, and marched to the sea. Confederate resistance collapsed after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The American Civil War was one of the earliest true industrial wars in human history. Railroads, steamships, mass-produced weapons, and various other military devices were employed extensively. The practices of total war, developed by Sherman in Georgia, and of trench warfare around Petersburg foreshadowed World War I. It remains the deadliest war in American history, resulting in the deaths of 620,000 soldiers and an undetermined number of civilian casualties. Victory for the North meant the end of the Confederacy and of slavery in the United States, and strengthened the role of the federal government. The social, political, economic and racial issues of the war decisively shaped the reconstruction era that lasted to 1877. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What were some of the roles of animals during the American Civil war? Q. I am doing a proect having to do with the roles of animals during the american civil war. I know that horses and mules helped as a form of transportation for soldiers and goods, but any one know any other animals used? And does anyone know how many horses died during the whole war? Any information would help. Thanks! Asked by Maria - Sat May 17 17:07:01 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. neither army could move unless they had horses or mules. that's why they were singled out to be shot. i couldn't tell you how many died during the war, but i can guess that it was in the hundreds if not thousands. also, dogs were used quite often for sentry duty, or out with the calvary scouts. Q. Alright, wikipedia is seriously making my mind ache. I can't finish my 6-10 page project if I can't understand it. So, can you help me understand what the American Civil War is? This is what I've got so far: The American Civil War was a war between the Union and Southern Slave States. What did each side want? Who won in the end? What do the New York Draft riots have to do with this? All of theses answers are very helpful! Asked by Alyse - Sun Jan 20 00:51:11 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. OK "lys" - I just finished a grad school history course on the Civil War. In a nutshell, it was fought over SLAVERY. That's it ! ! ! The South wanted to keep it, so they started the war by seceding. The North refused to let the Southern states break up the Union Apologists for the South will say it was fought over state's rights. That is somewhat true. The war was fought over the Southern state's rights to keep SLAVERY. The North won, and the South had to give up SLAVERY. [Even the border slave states mentioned by "BigJohn" above that stayed in the Union had to give up slavery after the war.] Big John is right that there were some other regional issues, but the war was Primarily about SLAVERY. That's the current graduate level… [cont.] Answered by Spreedog - Sun Jan 20 01:24:20 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "American Civil War"
